The Salar Gallery opened in the centre of this small market town in 1991 to provide an exhibition space for local artists and craftsmen.
To find us, from the Town Car park, pass Roger Dean's Sheep sculpture and on reaching Bridge Street, turn left, pass the Supermarket, and we are a short way up on the left.
Our opening times for Gallery and Exhibitions are as follows Tues/Thurs/Fri/Sats 10am to 1pm & 2 to 5pm (Sat we close at 4) Other times and days by appointment. N.B. January to Easter week: afternoon times may vary. Please ring the Gallery in advance, 01837 810940, to be sure that we are open or to arrange an appointment (we are closed on Good Friday).
The Gallery celebrates the West Country – landscape, animals and rural subjects – through the eyes of artists (painters, sculptors, photographers and writers.) living in the area.

We also stock craftwork, prints, cards, candles, jewellery, local interest/local history books, (including James Ravilious' photographs) and local honey from Vivian's Honey and we run a Picture Framing Service.

A wide variety of work from up to 60 artists and craftsmen can be purchased.. You are most welcome to browse (and shop!)

Changing exhibition of artwork including animal paintings & landscapes by West Country artists, throughout the year & occasional solo & group exhibitions

The Cattle Auction, Hatherleigh Market

July 14th to September 12th, 2015

Eileen Gold moved to Hatherleigh in 1981 from Sussex, where she trained at the Brighton Art School and taught Art while raising her children.  For a period of over 30 years (until her death in 2014) she used her artistic skills to portray the town in a number of different ways including original paintings, ceramic sculptures and etchings, prints and postcards.  Her paintings capture beautifully the atmosphere of the town, the market and the surrounding countryside as well as that of Dartmoor and the North Cornish coast.

In 2008 she published a book entitled ‘Hatherleigh as I saw it’ which has just been reprinted.  It provides a lasting record of the places and people as they were at the turn of the Century, as seen through the eyes of an exceptional artist.

For this exhibition we also have a number of paintings on loan by kind permission of her family and others from the time before 1981 when she was living in Brighton, including some of Italy.
